Vietnam to Host Mekong Nation Summit

Oct. 31 – Vietnam is set to host the third Ayeyawadi-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Summit (ACMECS) and the fourth Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Summit (CLMV) from Nov. 4 to 7.

The event is expected to attract foreign leaders and officials from relevant ministries of member countries to discuss solutions to improve cooperation agreements reached at previous summits.

Four hundred businessmen from regional countries, plus representatives from international organizations, and investors from Japan, the Republic of Korea, the US and European Union are also expected to attend.

The ACMECS is expected to issue a joint statement regarding facilitating trade, investment and tourism between the five member countries while the CLMV is due to ratify a joint statement of leaders and a list of projects for implementation.

Deputy Foreign Minister Doan Xuan Hung told the Vietnam News Agency that new areas will are being addressed at these summits are the organization of an ACMECS Business Forum and a dialogue between ACMECS leaders and businessmen, that will offer excellent opportunities for businesses to hold discussions and to give suggestions and initiatives for trade, investment and tourism activities.

“Businesses are major participants and factors underlying cooperation. This is a new start and I believe that more and more businesses, not only from member countries but also other regional countries, will join in the cooperation mechanism,” Hung said.

The ACMECS is an economic cooperation mechanism that includes Cambodia , Laos , Myanmar , Thailand and Vietnam. The group aims to facilitate cooperation in the fields of trade-investment, industry-agriculture, transport, tourism, and human resource development.

On the other hand, the CLMV mechanism was formed under the initiative of Laos and also focuses on tourism, information technology and communication.
